Allmyapps new release coming soon… here’s a preview!

Hi Everybody! The last weeks were pretty busy at Allmyapps as we’re readying a new exciting release for you! We thought it could be a good idea to let you test what’s coming next so we’ve set up a beta version of our new release for you to see:

1. New Easy Setup interface. Browsing Allmyapps to find cool Applications are nice but when you just want to quickly setup a new computer, you don’t want to go through every category to find the apps you want to add in your list. This is why we’ve setup an “Easy Setup” page which gathers the best applications by category so that users can just create the list of applications they want to install in a few seconds.

2. Allmyapps Bundles for 1 click offline installation of your list of applications. Allmyapps now allows you to download your list of applications as a 1 click installable Bundle that you can transport on an USB key. It is especially useful if you need to install applications on PCs with no internet connection or if you just want to install the same list on several computers without having to download each application all over again.

3. Enhanced user interface. Our search interface has been revamped to be clearer and more efficient: each application is now shown as a small widget containing the most relevant information about the app. It makes finding applications much more efficient and fun.

4. Much improved usability. We were not satisfied with our current installation mechanism which required having Allmyapps Secure installer preinstalled for the service to work. With this new release, there is no need to preinstall anything; Allmyapps will work right out of the box! This will also simplify sharing your list of applications a lot!

5. A top notch application catalog. Having a great (read: complete &up-to-date) application catalog is key and we have a dedicated team working day and night to create the best application catalog out there: the best desktop applications out there are now installable in 1 click from Allmyapps. And users need not worry: every application has been carefully tested by our team: it is a 100% toolbar and virus free catalog.

Allmyapps has had a very good CES show last week in Las Vegas: Good business, good contacts, good mood… exactly what we love :-) Thibauld will tell you more about it in a next post.

Today it is time to go back to work so we’ve put online the first new apps of 2010! Be assured that a whole lot more will come this year as we recently upgraded our internal tools to increase our efficiency and reactivity when it comes to adding new applications. We really aim at providing you with the best applications in their latest version and one of our new year resolution for 2010 is to deliver you new applications each week, the famous ones, the new ones… every application that you might need. So do not hesitate to blame me (Arnaud) if we ever fail on that point, but I can already tell you that this will not happen :-)

Allmyapps begins 2010 at the CES Las Vegas

Today opens the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and Allmyapps is attending! It is our first CES and we are really looking forward to testing all these new cool devices and make sure that Allmyapps will continue to provide users with the best available service to setup their device.

Allmyapps is exhibiting at LeWeb 09

Allmyapps is a proud sponsor of LeWeb 09 this year! LeWeb is the only European event which have the Silicon Valley migrate for a few days in Europe, it is just huge and we are really looking forward to being there!

The show will begin tomorrow and we will be demoing a new project that we’ve been developing with our partner Intel. You’ll get to know more on that very soon!

So if you happen to be in Paris for LeWeb 09, you will be warmly welcomed at our booth. Plus, we are located just in front of the Nespresso corner, the most strategic place :)

Meanwhile, Allmyapps has also been selected among several french startups to pitch tonight at the OpenCoffee party organized before LeWeb09 and we thought we’d share our 4 slides pitch with you!

Ubuntu 9.10 now live on Allmyapps !

As you all probably know by now, Ubuntu 9.10 (aka Karmic Koala) has been released today. This is a great step forward for the Linux desktop and we surely did not want to lag behind with Allmyapps! So we’re happy to announce the immediate availability of Allmyapps for Ubuntu 9.10 (also in available in french for the first time).

We also setup a custom search page to provide you with a comprehensive and visually appealing list of the new desktop applications in Ubuntu 9.10 compared to Ubuntu 9.04. As you will see, this list is not truly exact as some “old” package will show up among the new ones but still, it gives you a very good overview of what’s new in Ubuntu 9.10.

This new release also brings a lot of small improvements like a new home page [I must admit I am particularly fond of our brand new fading carousel :) ], the ability to propose applications that should be installable from allmyapps and other things like an application submission page which we’ll talk about in a future post with more in-depth details about our strategy here.

Meanwhile, we really hope that you’ll enjoy using Allmyapps with your brand new Ubuntu 9.10 and please continue to send us your ideas and feedbacks as they are really valuable to us !

Once again, congratulations to all Ubuntu developers for this great new release !

20.000+ apps installed and counting!

At the beginning of this week, allmyapps.com past the 20.000 application installations mark, which means that allmyapps helped you install more than 10.000 apps only in August! This is just great and we felt like blogging about it to thank you all!

First of all, thanks to everyone of you who sent us feedbacks, reviews and screenshots since the beginning! We normally send an email to thank all of you who contribute but lately there were so many that we got a bit overwhelmed… but we are catching up slowly :) Thank you for your contributions as they really fuels our motivation and please be sure that we are carefuly considering every single idea you sent us. We will try as much as possible to have them included in allmyapps future releases!

A big thank also to Kevin Thompson from ElementOS, a Media OS for Home Theater or media center PC, who also used to run tuxsoftware.com. Indeed, ElementOS will propose allmyapps.com integrated as a their main application installation tool. Kevin also got in touch with us and gave us excellent ideas and feedbacks for the future and, thanks to him, you’ll likely see a webapps section appear on allmyapps soon!

Thanks also to Umarks, a firefox add-on to create, delete, backup and restore lists of installed/deinstalled Ubuntu packages, for integrating allmyapps in their search feature so that users can see package description directly on allmyapps.

We’re really happy to see projects using allmyapps so if you want to integrate with allmyapps, feel free to do it and get in touch with us to see if we can help!

Finally, just a few words about a feature that we forgot to talk about in our last blog post: if you want to point somebody to a package description page no matter what his Ubuntu version, you can point him to http://allmyapps.com/package/ (example: http://allmyapps.com/package/amarok). Allmyapps will detect his Ubuntu version and redirect him to the right package description page.

Allmyapps new features (finally) exposed

Wow, we are already 24th of august and I still haven’t communicated on the new features that went live on allmyapps… on August 8th, shame on me! I hope this post will repair this mistake and help you be up-to-date with what’s going on at allmyapps.

First of all, let me thank you for all the attention that allmyapps got lately. As our number of installations shows, our number of users has largely increased during the last month. Indeed, you installed more than 8.000 applications through allmyapps during the last month! We are really glad that you appreciated our last release with the ability the build list of applications… Since then, we added a whole bunch of new features, including some of the most asked features! Here is a little summary of the most important features that got included in our last release:

You can now share your application list thanks to a “Share this” button located on the top right of your list:

You can just share its URL as it now has its own public URL (see for example my application list) but you can also share it by email:

You can even share your application list via a widget on your website or blog:

Besides the list sharing capabilities, we also added new package repositories (canonical repository, google repository and medibuntu repository to name them). So, you can now install non Open Source but popular applications such as Google Earth, Picasa, Skype as well as codecs from the the medibuntu repository directly from allmyapps.

Last but not least, we added a statistics module from which you can which are the most popular applications on allmyapps. You can see statistics the way you like: by day, by week, by month… This way you can keep track in real time of the most popular applications on allmyapps.

Of course, we also fixed a lot of issues you reported to us and notably resolved the issue you were facing with Firefox 3.5. We basically removed the strict user agent control, this way, anybody is now able to install packages from allmyapps provided the apturl handler is registered correctly in his web browser.

That’s pretty much all for this release, we hope you’ll like it and will continue to tell us what you think about it! And if you know people who could be interested by allmyapps, please spread the word :)

allmyapps Moblin application store… first screenshots!

Last week, we had our first allmyapps version for Moblin running.. so we took some screenshots to share it with you! For those of you who do not know yet what Moblin is, Moblin aims at being a Linux platform optimized for Mobile devices. Among other things, Moblin aims at being very fast to boot (5 seconds max) and at providing a specific user interface dedicated to netbook devices:

  • usable and user-friendly (dedicated UI based on Clutter, an open source library to create fast and visually rich animated effects in Open GL )
  • fast (by having every key system component written in low level language)
  • tightly integrated with internet services (Twitter and other social networks… )

Moblin

This project was bootstraped by Intel and is now in the hands of the Linux Foundation (though Intel continues to be a very active contributor to make sure that they provide the best hardware reference platform for Moblin). Not everybody realizes that there are, in fact, 2 versions of Moblin : 1 for netbooks and 1 for MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) which are smaller devices than Netbooks.

We had the opportunity to meet Intel while they were in the early stage of Moblin 2 development at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and we thought there was an opportunity to complement Moblin stack with our appstore as Moblin does not have built in application store functionalities. Intel nicely provided us with the necessary material to start porting allmyapps to Moblin and here is the very first result:

Please consider that 1/ I am not a professional photographer :) 2/ We’re using a very early development version of Moblin for MID and this is why you cannot see the fancy UI yet… It is obviously only a proof of concept for now and we should continue working on our UI to make it even better suited to Moblin constrained environment but still, we were pleased with the result!

We will be showcasing our Moblin solution at the Intel Developer Forum at San Francisco (September 22-24) so if you happen to be in the area, don’t hesitate to come by and meet us!
